Project Description
The City of Roanoke Rapids CDBG Contingency Project involved the acquisition of 10 vacant substandard/dilapidated homes on one block in the Historic Roanoke Rapids Mill Village. Coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office was required in order to complete demolition activities and meet any required rehabilitation standards.
The 2-story balloon style framed houses that were rehabilitated were gutted to the studs and rebuilt with a new floor plan. Original hardwood floors were maintained as well as the central brick chimney and fireplace that was left exposed as a feature element of the rehabilitation. The houses were well insulated with new windows and following rehabilitation were sold to low-to-moderate income owners. The remaining properties are maintained as open space to provide a more open feel for this neighborhood.
